Is your system ready for Windows 7? Microsoft’s announcement of a reduced memory footprint for the new operating system has been the topic of much discussion. Why is this so important for the future of Windows?
Why All the Fuss?
Almost everything you read about Windows 7 has some blurb about the supposed reduced memory requirements of the operating system (where, how to install Windows 7 on your own system). Without the speculation that Windows 7 will be able to prove these allegations, we take a look at why memory requirements are such a hot topic at the moment.
What is a Memory Footprint?
In short, the memory requirements of each program is simply the amount of memory used by the software while it is operating. While this is an important thing to be aware of any software, it is doubly so for an operating system. Finally, one can not simply kill the operating system to free additional memory. Sure, there are things you can do the amount of memory that an operating system is used to reduce, but there is a minimum, that it’s always bind.
Why Not Just Buy More Memory?
The memory is today while cheap, why so thought how much using an operating system if you only buy? Now, on one of the notion is “cheap” relative. While the system requirements for 64-bit versions of Vista lists 1 GB of RAM as minimum, 4 GB is recommended. This is where I begin to get a little concerned since the recommended requirements are actually starting to exceed the maximum amount of RAM recognized in previous Windows versions. Even though most of these previous versions were 32-bit, this is still a big jump.
In the past the trend has always, that any subsequent Windows operating system requires ever greater amounts of system resources. Thus is the claim that Windows 7 is Microsoft, this trend Bock, people some high hopes. At this point, while Windows 7 is still in pre beta, there is still some debate the question, whether the operating system able to meet this promise. We keep watch, but with the thumb.
Update – Windows 7 Memory Requirements
Since the article was first published in time, has officially released Windows 7 and Microsoft announced the storage requirements. Basically Microsoft recommends a minimum of 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit versions of the operating system and a minimum of 2 GB for 64-bit versions. If you want to have the Windows XP mode on the benefits, should these requirements run extended up to an additional 1 GB RAM.
One of the big differences is that recommendations from Microsoft for Windows 7 a lot seem more realistic than Vista to be given. That said, with Vista, requires most people correctly performed much more than the minimum requirements for the operating system specified. With Windows 7, the requirements seem sufficient. Nevertheless you are much better off if you have 4 GB of RAM, especially if you a 64 bit version.
Will Windows 7 run on less? The user community says yes – Windows 7 can boot up in systems with less RAM, but remember that there is a difference between just being able to boot your PC and actually being able to do anything with it. So, if you actually plan to use any applications and don’t want your system to slow to a crawl, it’s best not to try to scrape by with less than the minimum.
